Supanova Melbourne 2014

Amazing weekend in Melbourne for Supanova and the Ledgers!
Excellent Friday night at the State library for the Ledgers awards, big congrats to all the winners and my mate Pat Grant, on winning the Gold for "Toormina Video" and for "Blue"
I was so impressed with the new wave of local comic creators as well as some "classics" at Supanova artists alley. It really felt like the standard of local work has jumped lightyears ahead.

Fil Barlow and Helen

Mal And Gary

Gary and some clown...

Great to catch up with Gary Chaloner, Mal Briggs, Fil Barlow, Ian Mc Call, Julie Ditrich, Wolfgang Bylsma and so many more!
Big thanks to the "mighty" Tim Mc Ewen!

Joe Kubert 1926-2012

I was saddened to hear that legendary comic creator Joe Kubert passed on August 12. Younger comic creators that don't know his work should really seek it out, he was a master of his craft.

I sadly, only really began to appreciate his work in the past 10 years or so. His work is brilliant, exciting and full of heart... exactly what I believe great comics should be.

I count myself very fortunate, as I was lucky enough to chat with him briefly at Supanova 2010 in Sydney. He was a gentleman, insightful and very generous with this old fanboy.

Supanova 2010... thanks to Tim McEwen for introducing me to Mr Kubert.

Belated Supanova report or The day I met DAVE JOHNSON!

I know Sydney Supanova was a while ago now, but I've been supabusy and getting over the flu ... anyhow, this years show was massive! I decided not to get a table for the first time in years, and just cruise around getting the chance to catch up with alot of the local creators and friends, like Gee Hale, Stephen Ford, Doug Holgate, Anthony Calvert, Julie Ditrich, Jozef Szekeres, Tom Bonin and a bunch more talented peeps.
Dave and me!
Hey, Dave must be a DIABLA fan!

I had my geek on in a big way, as I got the chance to meet and chat with comics/animation/design genius The Reverend Dave "Devil Pig" Johnson! I've been a HUGE fan of Dave's work since "Super Patriot" back in the early 90s, through to his awesome cover designs for Marvel, DC and Vertigo, especially his Batman Detective covers and his 100 Bullets covers (young reader may have heard of BEN 10... well Dave designed all that cool stuff too).

He gave a very frank and funny talk about all sorts including meeting his comic idols in person... and how disappointing it can be...
Well lucky for me and all his fans - he did not disappoint, and was the one of the funniest chatty artist you could meet. I asked him to sign my copy of "Drink and Draw"... he did ten steps better!

BIG Thanks to good friend Frank Kennedy for taking these snaps!  (I was too giddy at the time to organize anything!)

Supanova Sydney 2010 ... what a show!!

Firstly I have to thank my wonderful wife and fun loving nieces for all their help at the stand, as well as my brother Joe and my former partner in crime David Tang!! It was great to see so many new and familar faces at the Sydney show and my thanks to all the good people that came by to support me. It also helps to be neighboured with the uber talented (and popular) Stewart McKenney...

"International design champion ... Mr Tang returns!"

"Sketch monkey sketch!"

I'm kicking myself for forgetting my camera, 'cause the cospaly was outstanding, I was busting to meet the Immomens but I only got a very brief chat in (more gushing on my part..)

Luckily, I managed to sneak away from my stand on the Saturday, to attend a talk by the legendary Joe Kubert... wow, what a mild mannered inspirational speaker. He shared insightful knowledge, and some great old stories about his artistic journey... warmed the depths of my geeky heart.

But I gotta thank my mate Tim McEwen for personally introducing me to Mr Joe Kubert, as he effortlesly sketched Tim a sweet little portrait of Sgt Rock... then Tim also managed to get a photo of Mr Kubert and myself... Tim you ROCK!!!

SUPANOVA Melbourne 2010 "It's my first time!!"

Friendly natives

Thanks to all the friendly Victorians who came round to the Littlehammer stand and made a few healthy purchases! It was our first time at Supanova Melbourne and I was impressed with the crowds, however not the crazy crowds that we experienced in Brisbane last year.

Paul Spencer out classing me

It was great meeting some "new" creatives like Paul Spencer ( a great Supanova neighbour), and Jeffrey 'CHAMBA' Cruz and Hugh. way too talented for there own good!

Wendy and Stewart

Stewart tells it how it is!

It's always great to catch up with old friends like the very talented and helpful Stewart McKenny and his lovely and equally helpful wife Wendy. Shout out to Doug Holgate and Colin Wilson for being so bloody talented!

Cheers to old mates Tim McEwan and Stephen Ford! And much love to my Rachael for actually coming to the show, taking these pictures, AND putting up with me!

SUPANOVA SYDNEY

Wow, what a blast! I attended this Supanova as a "tourist" for the first time in about 5 years, and I still had a great time meeting people. There was so much great local talent at Artist alley this year that really blew me away, a couple of stand outs I thought were David Follet and Greg Holfeld who had some great work on display.

Chris Sequeira managed to get me to talk on a panel regarding Aussie comics, I'm glad it was a last minute invite. (cause I may have lost sleep over it.)

That dork in the red t-shirt is me, with Jan Scherpenhuizen and Chris.

Also I got to catch up with Colin (Star Wars: Invasion) Wilson, who had some interesting theories on the future of comics regarding iphones and other hand held computers. I just got in to hear a talk by Tim Sale who is one of my fav artist, bummer I missed out on meeting him later..

Here's the talented Cefn Ridout, Me, Colin Wilson and Frank Kennedy (who did get to meet Tim Sale AND get a cool sketch from him...)

Big thanks to Ivan for the cool Wolverine t-shirt!
