I remember that second book cover in my old high school library, yes yes that was quite a while ago I know.

The cover for 'John Carter of Mars' you show was by Michael Whelan, who did covers for all eleven books in the series. They are a rare case of covers being done by an artist who had obviously read the book first - all of them are both excellent and accurate (I had the cover to 'Gods of Mars' as my PC backdrop for a while). Worth hunting out.
The books themselves are classics as well.
